Charter Oak State College

Hello evryone, I am graduate of Charter Oak State College (COSC). Like many, life's balderdash obviated degree completion for me. COSC apportioned the vehicle for compendious toward the first undergraduate degree. Later, accepted into graduate school, two year later, I hold an MBA. 6 years later in 2014 graduated with honors with a Ph.D. This all started with Charter Oak State College. I read this complaints and wonder what are the underlying issues regarding this sure foundation, COSC. College, Life and Love is what we make it.

I was so excited about enrolling into Charter Oak, but today the experience I had I am all set. I will be witdrawing my application and requesting my $75.00 application be returned. They have a rude ass young lady working in the admisison office who has no manners what's so ever. Was very aruguamentative, hung up when i wasnt finish speaking, refused to provide me her name. I havent heard from an admission counselor and have a lot of questions. I attended online classes before and never had this expereince before. Has left a bad taste in my mouth so i am not interested in attending a school like this no matter what programs they have to offer. V.M

I recently met a graduate of Charter Oak with a Bachelor in Business. She went on to the University of Bridgeport to obtain a Master's in Nutrition. I have a BSBA (Summa Cum Laude) and an MBA (with Distinction) from a legitimate major university. This woman is completely ignorant about business and economics!!! Her grammar and spelling is at a 5th grade level. How she ever graduated from high school is beyond me, let alone a degree in business!. This indicates to me the quality of the business education at Charter Oak. I also now wonder about Univ. of Bridgeport, as she managed to graduate there as well. This woman is a stupid as a box of rocks.

The only reason why you go here is if you need a regionally accredited BS/BA degree. Their curriculum is trash, & they make their money by forcing you to take at least 2 stupid courses (IDS 101 – a watered down English course and a capstone course). That's fine they have to make their money, but what is ridiculous is the semester fee for just being a student i.e. every semester you pay $245/semester INCLUDING summers. And if you can't enter the capstone course, because of some arbitrary and frivolous requirement they have (which they don't make clear), they'll still charge you. They are nice to you when you apply, but they say we can't tell for sure until you pay us $75 to apply, then we'll look at your transcripts. LOL. Whatever you do, record and document everything. Whether it's a phone call, email, etc. Have proof in case they say anything that is wrong or ambiguous, and hold it against them. In the end, you get what you pay for - this isn't a degree from Harvard, or even an average school like Penn State, but it's better than nothing I guess (for <$5,000). If you need a degree to simply check off on a sheet it does the trick. As long as you keep your expectations realistic for an institution like this, you should be fine. I would also recommend students to look at Thomas Edison State College as well but they're not that great either (and avoid Excelsior which is the worst).

I just earned my AS degree through COSC and I only took ONE class through the school. All my other credits were either transferred in or I took them through other online venues that were cheaper. Whenever I emailed the school prior to enrollment or after, I always received a prompt response. I found my advisor and counselor to be very helpful and supportive. If I had a question on whether a class would transfer in, the registrar's office answered my questions. The only thing I felt lacking, was the actual online course I took. I felt the instructor was slow to respond, which is an issue in an 8-week course with several assignments due each week. I also felt like the books used for the course were lacking. With that being said, I would definitely recommend COSC.

I cannot say enough good things about Charter Oak. I loved it, and wish that I had gone there at the beginning (as opposed to transferring there halfway into my degree). The education is exceptional, the online platform and course designs are very user-friendly, the classes are engaging, and the faculty & staff were very helpful. I went to two very reputable (and expensive) schools prior to transferring to Charter Oak, and I did not feel challenged or inspired until I got to COSC. The professors are accessible, knowledgeable, and supportive. Before COSC, my drive and passion to learn was non-existent, but thanks to my overwhelmingly positive experience at COSC, I have decided to continue my education and get a Master's. There's still hope for a good education at an affordable cost!

COSC deteriorated since 2007 from a viable degree program to a capricious financial trap, as several expressed on yelp. After followimg my recommendation, a student became painfully aware of new requirements for redundant objectives, fees every semester to stay matriculated, course facilitators who lack pedagogical skills, and broken processes for reviews, including degree applications, billing, and grievances. Hopefully a full report can restore integrity to this once helpful untraditional approach.

I was able to transfer in all my credits from almost a dozen schools to complete my degree. I was accepted into several graduate programs including Califoria State University and the University of Florida. COSC was helpful, affordable, and perfect for me.

My issue would be the value of this degree. I have only taken one class and it was a fast short term eight week session. The class was ITE 101, I hardly did any work--logged in to take a quiz and a mid-term along with a final. I managed to get a 78.9% a C+. If I would have put an ouce of effort I am sure I would have received an A. Either this course was too easy or the classes are not very challenging. I will find out shortly next semester. My real issue is the value of this degree after. Will employers care that it was an online class? On top of that, it's a "concentration" degree. Not a B.S. degree that states my major. I am only hoping to transfer to a state college after to get my masters with the title of my local university on that degree. I am only attending this university due to employer funding. Does anyone own a degree from this college and hold a respected job/career as an outcome of this degree?

I took classes at COSC for two semesters. The professors had variable levels of interest in teaching an online course; I suspected some of them were in it to make a quick, hassle-free buck. Of course, this is encountered at a traditional school as well. The materials and assignments were also comparable to what one would find at a public college. There is potential for more student accountability at COSC because of the heavy use of discussion boards in most classes. I say potentially because the biggest problem I had with COSC, and the reason I transferred to a traditional bricks-and-mortar university, were the other students. There are no admission requirements for COSC. Consequently, there were a lot of idiots who couldn't spell or write a coherent sentence, much less formulate an original thought. This made responding to discussion boards (a requirement in three of my classes) extremely painful. I felt like I was talking to kindergartners, and I knew I wasn't gaining anything of value from such discourse. I began to wonder if employers would respect a degree earned from COSC. I wondered if I would value and be proud of my college education if I remained there. I decided "no" on both counts, took the credits I had earned, and ran. That was two years ago. In five weeks I'll be graduating with my BA from a traditional state university, an accomplishment I'll be proud of for the rest of my life.

The best way for a working adult to complete their degree. Charter Oak was founded as a degree completion state school and they deliver on that mission. The value is exceptional, the staff is incredibly supportive and the coursework is challenging and rewarding. This is not a fly-by-night operation. I would recommend this regionally accredited school to any working adult who has credit sitting about and wants to finish their degree.

Without this college, getting my B/S would take forever! It only took me one year after all my transferred credits to graduate. I love Charter Oak and if I had to do it again, I would still choose Charter Oak State College!

I can not say enough positive things about Charter Oak State College. I never would have completed my college degree without their flexible class and credit-earning options. First, the staff is wonderful. Everyone from financial aid counselors to academic advisors respond quickly and efficiently to all questions and inquiries. Typically, my advisor responded to my questions the same day. Second, the vast majority of the faculty is excellent. They are easy to get in touch with via e-mail and/or phone. I had a math professor who offered weekly call-in hours for help. The content and structure of most classes is challenging and rewarding. You WILL get a quality education at Charter Oak. My concentration was psychology. I sat for the psychology GRE and did very well thanks to comprehensive/challenging classes I took through COSC. Third, in addition to taking online classes, you can also obtain credit through portfolio reviews and standardized tests, such as CLEP, DANTES, Excelsior, and the GRE. These options help students save a great deal of time and money (although class tuition is very reasonable). Finishing a degree at Charter Oak is really THE way for adults with work and family responsibilities to complete their education. I have a demanding, rotating work schedule, so I was not able to attend traditional college classes. I am proud to be an alumna of Charter Oak State College.

If it wasn't for Charter Oak, I never would have finished my college degree. As an adult working full-time (and then some) and raising my son, Charter Oak provided the only viable, affordable option for me to finish my degree. The support I received, both academic and administrative, was excellent. My entire educational experience with Charter Oak was top-notch. I highly recommend the school to all non-traditional learners.

Excellent value for the money! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. You develop a personal relationship over time with them over time.

As a class taker at Charter Oak allow me to offer this review to any potential student thing about attending this fine college. The course was very interesting, the instructor was always in contact with the students, and the material was top notch. However, the quality of the VHS tapes was rather poor from usage. From the beginning to the end Charter Oak State College was number one in all aspects! The military department ar COSC is also top notch and they handle all military amd non-military issues with respect and speed. Overall a very nice experience..
